B-thrifty on ABC 7 partners spread the giving spirit year round

Hundreds of families in Prince William County are getting a cart full of food at Bthrifty without spending a dime.

It’s all thanks to a special community partnership that spreads the giving spirit year-round.The owners of B-thrifty in Woodbridge, along with the Salvation Army, Capital Area Food Bank, and a local church are giving families’ bank accounts a break.

Once a month the mega store that sells second-hand items and more teams up with local charities and helps cash-strapped neighbors put food on the table.

Dozens of volunteers of every age sifted through 12,000 pounds of donations from the Capital Area Food Bank. They stuffed bag after bag with fruits, bread, canned goods and sweet tooth favorites.

“We just want to give,” says Alonso Zamora, B-thrifty’s co-founder, who opened shop a year and a half ago.

He grew up in Chile with parents who struggled financially. Now that he’s living out the American dream, he’s paying it forward without asking those he helps for proof they need it.

The next time for this event will be Thursday, February 28.

On Thursday, 175 families were fed, which covers about 800 people.
